Why India Celebrates This Day on July 1st (Happy Doctor’s Day)?

Out of the many national days that have come up this year so far, I believe that this one is such an important day to point out due to the coronavirus pandemic. This has been a year where many doctors have sacrificed their lives for this virus and have portrayed their ability to be fearless.

On this day of July 1st, I want to speak to you about the history of a person who influenced the Indian Government to celebrate this national day on this particular day. Also, I will discuss the special theme that was released for this Doctors Day in India.

Who is Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy?

Doctors Day was celebrated for the very first time in 1933 at Winder, Georgia, United States. In India, the Indian Government established Doctors Day in 1991 on the day of July 1st.

Although other countries celebrate this day on March 28th, there is one reason behind India celebrating this day on July1st: Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy.

During India’s freedom struggle, Dr. Roy was known for being the personal physician of Mahatma Gandhi and the medical counselor of Jawaharlal Nehru, the 1st Prime Minister of India. He was also awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1961 (one year before his death).

If you look at the image above, you would realize that Dr. Roy actually died on the same day as he was born. From a 2012 study in the journal Annals of Epidemiology, 14% of people who are above the age of 60 are likely to die on their birthdays. If you are interested to learn about the reasons behind this interesting fact, I have posted a link down below.

On the day that Dr. Roy died, he made sure that his home was donated into a nursing home which was named after his mother, Aghorkamini Devi.

A British Medical Journal refers to this man as the 1st medical consultant in the subcontinent of India. It was his sacrifice that made the Indian Government establish this important day on his birthday (you can look at it in both ways since both of them are on the same days).

Aside from the medical side, he was also known to be very prominent in politics. He joined politics in 1925 and became the 2nd chief minister of West Bengal from 1948 to 1962.

What’s The Theme for This Year?

Every year from 1991, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has had the responsibility of hosting Doctors Day in India. Since this is a very peculiar year due to the pandemic, they have made a special theme related to the coronavirus.

Theme: “Lessen the mortality of COVID-19”

I have posted some direct quotes from the IMA about their approach to Doctors Day 2020.

“Doctor’s Day 2020 is dedicated to the innumerable doctors who are serving during this pandemic in the primary and secondary setups as well as the dedicated COVID care hospitals. Indian Medical Association gives the clarion call to reduce the mortality drastically by active intervention.”

Stated On The Indian Express

“This is certainly a different Doctor’s Day. And everyone of us count to make a difference.”
