What Made India Ban TikTok For The 2nd Time?

After the huge social media war between TikTok and YouTube, TikTok ratings jumped from 4.5 to 1.3 star ratings. I have spoken about this issue in detail in another blog which I have put the link below.

Why is India Eager To Ban TikTok For 2nd Time?

Especially after this huge controversy, many Indian people were looking towards another ban for TikTok since TikTok has already been banned in India before.

Now….the time has come where India not only banned TikTok, but also 58 other chinese apps. Read More to learn about the motivation that the Indian Government had for banning these apps.

The Government of India has enforced a ban on not only TikTok, but also 58 other chinese apps that are popular in India under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act. The Indian Government has also stated that they haven’t shared any personal information of those people who were using these 59 apps to any foreign government—including China.

The highly-popular apps that were banned were TikTok, UC Browser, CamScanner and Helo App.

Internet Security

Looking into some of the reasons why these apps might be banned, there has been lots of talk about cybersecurity and the use of chinese apps in India might danger the citizen’s information along with intelligence secrets.

“Stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorised manner to servers which have locations outside India. The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defense of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures.” – Ministry of Information and Technology

Stated On The Indian Express & The New York Times

There are many rumors that these Chinese apps might be collecting data from their user’s profile and sending them to Chinese Intelligence Agencies. A few months back, this same question erupted with Huawei stealing information from Western countries during the 5G war.

Even during the Ladakh conflict, many Indian soldiers were forced to delete chinese apps from their phones for national security concerns. Keep reading to learn about this conflict might be a reason behind this ban.

Ladakh Conflict

India and China have been butting heads for the past few days at the border. Due to heavy tensions between these two countries, there are chances that India might have pulled this stunt off in order to warn China about their actions.

For the past few years, it’s clear that huge technology companies (like Apple, Google, Facebook) are targeting India for the vast number of people living in that country. Statistics mentions that about 50% of Indian people are online. When zooming out, that’s about 500 million people!

Apps like TikTok have also noticed this amazing opportunity to capitalize upon. Since its release in 2017, about 1/3 of the global users in TikTok are from India. Now that this app is banned, this would hurt the chinese market on a high level along with the apps themselves.

Connecting this to the Ladakh Conflict, India might be banning these chinese apps so that they could play around with the chinese market. This might be a method that India is using to pay back for the 20 Indian lives lost in the border.

What’s The Future Impact?

The Indian people who were immensely dissolved in these apps will now have to look for new ones to spend their lockdown days upon. People would now have to look for new video chatting apps which might profit those non-chinese apps if people began to download in huge numbers.

Looking at the apps themselves, many of them rely on the huge Indian population for their source of income. Without India, these apps might be in grave danger where many people would also lose their jobs.

From a global perspective, India’s ban has also alarmed many other superpower countries to investigate on TikTok about the level of risk it might have on national security and their people.
